    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Ira Earl Major (ASN: 1025474), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 34th Infantry Regiment, 7th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Rembercourt, France, 1 November 1918. Although suffering from five wounds, one of which caused the loss of a hand, Corporal Major refused to be evacuated. He remained in command of his squad throughout the day and night and crawled into position the following morning to aid in the repulse of a German attack. His conduct furnished a great inspiration to the men of his company.
