The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Douglas MacDonald (ASN: 542071), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cunel, France, 11 October 1918. While acting as a litter bearer, Private MacDonald was painfully wounded in the hand by a machine-gun bullet, but refused to go to a dressing station, continuing to administer first aid to wounded under constant machine-gun and shell fire. On one occasion when a comrade had been buried by an exploding shell, Private MacDonald rushed two hundred yards into the open and worked under heavy fire at rescuing him. He was later killed by shell fire while giving aid to a wounded man.
