The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Simon E. Longfield (ASN: 50169), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bois-de-Clerembauts, France, 7 June 1918. Even after having been seriously wounded, Corporal Longfield continued with his duties as runner throughout the whole night, after which he was ordered to the rear because of weakness, caused by loss of blood.
