The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Frank Sidney Long, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 110th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fleville, France, 5 October 1918. Haying been wounded in the side by shrapnel while caring for wounded men of his platoon, Lieutenant Long refused to be evacuated, but returned from the dressing station to his command. While withdrawing his platoon to a better position under heavy barrage he was instantly killed by shell fire. His courage and self-sacrifice furnished a splendid inspiration to his men.
