The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Morrison F. Lewis (ASN: 1249842), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 107th Field Artillery, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Baslieux, France, 5 September 1918. Corporal Lewis directed a detail running a telephone line to an advanced observation post under heavy artillery and machine-gun fire, and when shell fire rendered the maintenance of the line impossible, directed the detail in the evacuation of wounded infantrymen. Subjecting himself to intense enemy fire, he carried to the rear the body of an officer who had been killed by enemy machine-gun fire.
