The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Harry D. Leonard (ASN: 42049), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in operations south of Soissons, France, July 19 to 22, 1918. Severely wounded on 19 July 1918, Private Leonard continued to go forward with his company until the operations were over. On 20 July in spite of his wounds, he carried a message through a heavy barrage.
