The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private John Leonard Layer (ASN: 1038310), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery B, 10th Field Artillery, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Eugene, France, 14 July 1918. Private Layer continued on duty, repairing breaks in telephone line, even after being severely wounded and almost unconscious.
