    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Albert J. Kunze (ASN: 58119), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, south of Soissons, France, 18 July 1918. Having reached the first objective, his platoon was temporarily halted by heavy enemy machine-gun fire. Corporal Kunze, hearing cries for help from a wounded comrade who lay about 200 yards in front of the platoon, voluntarily left shelter, went out under heavy machine-gun fire, and succeeded in bring him to a place of safety. In so doing, corporal Kunze was severely wounded.
