The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Hugh Johnston (ASN: 1898103), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 325th Infantry Regiment, 82d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Juvin, France, 11 October 1918. Voluntarily leaving shelter Sergeant Johnston crawled out into the open under heavy enemy fire to the aid of a wounded soldier. While administering first aid to the latter he was himself wounded, but he nevertheless attempted to carry his comrade to safety, and in so doing he received a second wound.
