    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Ewart Johnston, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the attack on Malbrouck Hill and Consenvoye Woods, north of Verdun, France, 8 October 1918. Captain Johnston led his company through heavy machine-gun and artillery fire in the attack on his objective. Upon reaching a position scheduled for a passage of the lines he located a strong enemy position. Upon his own initiative he led his company in a bayonet attack and captured about 200 prisoners.

    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Infantry) Ewart Johnston, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Captain Johnston distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 116th Infantry, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near the Consenvoye Woods, France, 8 October 1918, and by his brilliant leadership. [This award was rescinded under GHQ, American Expeditionary Forces, Citation Orders No. 10 (August 31, 1920) as the recipient has been awarded a Distinguished Service Cross for deed including this act.]
