The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Wilbur Johnson (ASN: 297447), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery C, 119th Field Artillery, 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Les Pres Farm, France, 9 August 1918. When an enemy shell burst at the rear of the gun pit, wounding him and all the members of the gun crew except the chief of the section, Private Johnson concealed the fact that he had received two severe wounds in the back, after he had assisted in removing his wounded comrades. He then resumed his duties and continued serving the piece for about ten minutes until he collapsed.
