The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Oscar E. Johnson, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 60th Infantry Regiment, 5th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cunel, France, 14 October 1918. Private Johnson volunteered and went to the rescue of his platoon commander who had been wounded and was lying in a very dangerous position, subjected to heavy machine-gun and shell fire. He succeeded in carrying the officer to a place of safety.
