The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Philip H. Hurley, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Eighty-Third Company, Sixth Regiment (Marines) (Attached), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Bois-de-Belleau, France, on 6 June 1918. First Lieutenant Hurley displayed coolness, judgment, and utter fearlessness, in leading his platoon to its objective under heavy fire.
