The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant George E. Hughes (ASN: 2262208), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 348th Machine-Gun Battalion, 91st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Eclisfontaine, France, September 27 – 30, 1918. Sergeant Hughes was seriously gassed 27 September but refused to leave his post and continued working and fighting with his comrades under heavy shelling for three days till complete exhaustion forced him to be evacuated.
