The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Paul H. Hines, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 102d Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Marcheville and Riaville, France, September 25 – 26, 1918. Lieutenant Hines showed great bravery and devotion to duty throughout this action. At one time he went through a violent artillery bombardment and machine-gun fire to reestablish broken liaison with battalion on left. Later he voluntarily led a party of first-aid men across an open field swept by machine-gun fire and rescued a wounded officer after several previous attempts had failed.
