The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Thomas J. Hickey (ASN: 136703), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery C, 101st Field Artillery, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Samogneux, France, 24 October 1918. After his piece had received two direct hits and he was the only man left uninjured in his squad, Private Hickey refused to seek shelter and assisted in the evacuation of the wounded. During a terrific shelling, he made two trips to the aid station with a litter.
