The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Albert W. Herman (ASN: 64357), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 102d Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Epieds, France, 21 July 1918. By the effective use of his bayonet, Sergeant Herman killed many of the enemy; and, although painfully wounded, he continued to fight until ordered to the rear by his commanding officer.
