The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Ullman Caldwell Hendler, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 110th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Courmont, France, 30 July 1918. Severely wounded in the shoulder early in the attack on the Bois-de-Grimpettes, Captain Hendler, though he was suffering intense pain, refused to be evacuated but continued to lead his company forward until the entire woods had been captured and the new position consolidated.
