The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Glenn C. Haynes, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 168th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bois-de-Chatillon, France, 16 October 1918. Captain Haynes, as battalion commander, distinguished himself by his coolness and leadership in the attack on Bois-de-Chatillon and Cote-de-Chatillon. When the commanders of his two frontline companies were put out of action after having obtained a footing upon the slopes, Captain Haynes personally took command of the two companies and in utter disregard for his own safety successfully led them through heavy artillery, machine-gun, and rifle fire to their objective.
