The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Alexander S. Harrington (ASN: 235554), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Montblainville, France, 30 September 1918. Sergeant Harrington, though wounded and about to be carried to the rear, seeing two comrades who were apparently more severely wounded than himself, ordered the litter bearers to carry the other men first. Before the litter bearers returned, Sergeant Harrington was killed by a machine-gun bullet. His bravery, sacrifice, and qualities of leadership were an inspiration to the members of his command.
