The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Raymond H. Harrell (ASN: 2311808), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 11th Infantry Regiment, 5th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bois-des-Rappes, France, 21 October 1918. While carrying a message to another battalion in the line, Private Harrell was wounded by a machine-gun bullet at the same time his companion was killed. He courageously delivered his message, despite the wound, and received an answer which he delivered to his company and battalion commanders before being evacuated.
