The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Henry John Harlin (ASN: 1212618), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Machine-Gun Company, 107th Infantry Regiment, 27th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Ronssoy, France, 29 September 1918. After an advance of more than 2,000 yards with the infantry, Private Harlin crawled through a barbed-wire entanglement and remained the entire night under machine-gun fire within a few yards of enemy position in order to protect his comrades from a surprise attack.
