The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private John J. Hanley (ASN: 2670941), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 326th Infantry Regiment, 82d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Juvin, France, 11 October 1918. While on duty as a stretcher bearer, Private Hanley was painfully wounded in the head, but he nevertheless continued to evacuate the wounded, crossing and re-crossing the Aire River several times under heavy fire, and refusing to secure treatment himself until all of the other wounded had been cared for.
