The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Charles Galloway Hammond (ASN: 115864), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters, 117th Train Headquarters and Military Police, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Vadenay, France, 15 July 1918. During the heavy shelling of Vadenay on the morning of 15 July Private Hammond voluntarily left a place of safety, went to the aid of a wounded French soldier, and brought him to shelter through heavy fire of large-caliber shells.
