    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Byron W. Hamilton (ASN: 102458), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 168th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on Hill 212, near Sergy, France, 28 July 1918. While leading an attack on machine guns on Hill No. 212 near Sergy, France, July 28, 1918, he himself ahead of this line, so wounded as to be unable to stand on his feet. Attacked by 10 Germans of the Prussian Guards, he rose to his feet and shot five of them. The others fled.
