The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Joseph C. Hahn (ASN: 2178107), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Machine-Gun Company, 354th Infantry Regiment, 89th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Remonville, France, 1 November 1918. Corporal Hahn displayed exceptional bravery and initiative in leading his machine-gun squad through heavy fire ahead of the infantry front line to a point only thirty yards from six enemy machine-guns which defended a hill. Despite the intense grenade and machine-gun fire, which was directed at him, he maintained such effective fire that the hostile guns were put out of action and the infantry advance thereupon resumed.
