The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Arvid W. Gulbrandsen, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 132d Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bois-de-Chaume, France, 8 October 1918. Leading his platoon against an enemy machine-gun nest which was inflicting severe casualties on his battalion, Lieutenant Gulbrandsen continued to advance alone in the face of the annihilating machine-gun fire, after 14 of his men were killed about him. Before reaching his objective, he was killed by machine-gun fire from his right flank.
