The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Fred John Grulkey (ASN: 2249897), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 113th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Bois d’Ormont, northeast of Samogneux, France, 12 October 1918. Private Grulkey was seriously wounded in the chest, but he continued in the advance until he was again wounded, when he crawled forward with his company to its objective.
