The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Samuel D. Grobtuck (ASN: 1709848), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 308th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Ville Savoye, France, 21 August 1918. While carrying a message to his battalion commander asking for reinforcements, Private Grobtuck passed through the village of Ville Savoye filled with mustard gas, and was killed by shell fire while crossing an open field under direct observation of the enemy.
