The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant James R. Grinstead (ASN: 1449747), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 137th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Buzemont, France, September 26 – 30, 1918. Although wounded in the foot, while still in the departure trench, he went forward in the attack with his company. Later, he led two platoons to the attack against superior numbers, and in the face of withering fire. Wounded a second time, he refused to be evacuated until the regiment was relieved.
