The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Frank L. Gottschalk, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 128th Infantry Regiment, 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Gilles, France, 3 August 1918. After being severely wounded while leading an attack on a machine-gun nest, Lieutenant Gottschalk continued to lead his platoon in the face of severe machine-gun fire, remaining on duty all night, until reaching the final objective.
