The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Robert Hazen Goodwin (ASN: 1308606), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company H, 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bellicourt, France, September 26 – 29, 1918. Sergeant Goodwin was badly gassed on the 26th of September and ordered to the hospital, but insisted on remaining at his post, despite the fact that he was suffering great pain. On September 29 he was painfully wounded by shell fire, but again remained with his platoon, refusing to be evacuated. He efficiently performed his duties until his company was relieved.
