The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Roy H. Gooding (ASN: 8706), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Section No. 554, Ambulance Service, American Expeditionary Forces, near Somme-Py, France, October 2 – 9, 1918. Private Gooding volunteered and drove an ambulance at night, relieving men who were exhausted, and evacuated wounded from the most advanced posts under shell fire. On October 5 he voluntarily went out and repaired an ambulance which had been damaged by a shell, in direct view of the enemy, who shelled the place continually as he worked. On October 7 he repaired another car under the same circumstances, assuring the prompt evacuation of the wounded.
