The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal James V. Gleason (ASN: 1243326), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 111th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fismette, France, August 9 – 13, 1918. When the enemy attacked our lines, employing liquid fire, Corporal Gleason inspired the troops of which he formed a part to hold the post. During the succeeding three days and nights, without food, he controlled the firing line of the advanced position until badly wounded by shrapnel.
