The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Fred George Givens, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 130th Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Marcheville, France, 10 November 1918. Captain Givens led the attack on Marcheville with exceptional bravery and, although wounded while passing through a heavy barrage, would not leave his company until his objective had been reached and the plans made for its defense.
