The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Raymond Gill (ASN: 1708394), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 308th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Ville Savoye, France, 24 August 1918. During the advance of his company across the Vesle River, Sergeant Gill, disregarding his severe wounds, insisting on leading a patrol to capture a sniper, who was occupying a formidable position to fire on our men. While on this precarious mission, Sergeant Gill was killed.
