The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) George Jacob Giger, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 114th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, north of Verdun, France, 12 October 1918. While leading his platoon in attack, Lieutenant Giger was wounded but refused evacuation, encouraging his men to continue, when he was again wounded. He then assisted in the removal of the wounded and refused attention until all others had received first aid.
