    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Kenneth Gardiner (ASN: 170093), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery A, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the morning of 17 July 1918, near St. Eugene, France, Corporal Gardiner although suffering from shell shock and badly wounded in the shoulder, he refused to be relieved, but carried three messages over shell-swept roads, being carried on only by what he thought was his duty. He was finally forced to go to the dressing station by his Battery Commander. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Kenneth Gardiner (ASN: 170093), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery A, 10th Field Artillery, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Eugene, France, 17 July 1918. Suffering from shell shock and a wound in the shoulder, Corporal Gardiner continued to carry messages over shell-swept roads until he was forced to go to the dressing station by his battery commander.
