The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Clarence F. Frey (ASN: 1786371), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 316th Infantry Regiment, 79th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Verdun, France, 7 November 1918. Acting as runner, Private Frey was sent from regimental headquarters to the front lines. On the way he was severely wounded by the fragment of a shell, but he continued on despite weakness from loss of blood and dazed from shock. He delivered his message before being evacuated.
