The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Stephen P. Frew (ASN: 1900536), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 326th Infantry Regiment, 82d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Juvin, France, 15 and 16 October 1918. After seeing a runner killed by a shell while passing through a terrific artillery barrage, Private Frew volunteered to carry the message, well knowing that he had to cross an open space swept by machine-gun fire, 400 yards from Ravine au Pierre to battalion headquarters, in full view of the enemy. He showed a courage and bravery which was an inspiration to all of his comrades.
