The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Ernest W. Freshour (ASN: 93503), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 166th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Ancerviller, France, 6 June 1918. After all communications had been cut off and his platoon had suffered heavy casualties, Private Freshour, with another member of his platoon, volunteered and carried a message through heavy artillery and machine-gun fire to their company commander, giving him the information necessary to reinforce the position.
