    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Infantry) Lee C. Fletcher, United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. First Lieutenant Fletcher distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 111th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Fismette, France, 10 – 13 August 1918, in voluntarily organizing and leading a detachment to defend an important position.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Lee C. Fletcher, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 111th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Fismette, France, August 10 – 13, 1918. When his battalion was attacked by a greatly superior force, Lieutenant Fletcher, intelligence officer, organized a detachment and successfully defended an important position. Later, when our barrage was falling short, he voluntarily carried a message to the artillery for the purpose of correcting the fire.
