By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Infantry) Newell R. Fiske, United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 15 July 1918, Captain Fiske exhibited the highest type of valor and heroism in leading troops in a counter attack near Fossoy, through intense enemy artillery bombardment, inspiring the men by his coolness and presence. He lost his life in the performance of his duty, saying as he was hit: “I am bumped off now boys. Go and get them.” [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]
