The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Eugene Robert Ferguson (ASN: 1448642), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 137th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Montrebeau Woods, France, 29 September 1918. Seeing a comrade lying severely wounded and unable to reach our lines, Corporal Ferguson left his own shelter and, in the face of intense machine-gun and artillery fire, went out into the open and carried his comrade back, being himself severely wounded before he regained our lines.
