By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Leroy Farst (ASN: 1935403), United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company K, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 8 October 1918, near Cierges, France, Private First Class Farst with great courage left his trench and went forward under heavy shell fire to within 75 yards of the enemy’s line in order to bring in his Platoon Commander who had been severely wounded in a reconnaissance on the enemy’s position. Private Farst was killed while making this self-sacrificing attempt. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]
