The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Ralph Ethier (ASN: 2256264), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 361st Infantry Regiment, 91st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Gesnes, France, 26 September 1918. Sergeant Ethier, who was in charge of the signal section attached to the attacking battalion, displayed remarkable coolness and disregard for personal danger in bringing the battalion telephone line through heavy artillery and machine-gun fire to the ridge which was being attacked, and there establishing communication with regimental headquarters.
