The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Charles H. Epler (ASN: 560697), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 59th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Ville Savoye, France, 8 August 1918. After several unsuccessful attempts to silence an enemy machine-gun nest had been made, Private Epler and another soldier volunteered to put the nest out of action. His companion was killed, but Private Epler succeeded in throwing grenades into the nest, setting fire to the ammunition boxes with which it was surrounded killing several of the crew and stopping the fire of the gun.
