The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Fred Engelbrecht (ASN: 43885), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fleville, France, 4 October 1918. When the attack of his company on the second objective was halted by machine-gun fire from the front, Sergeant Engelbrecht with a comrade advanced and destroyed the enemy machine-gun position, forcing four of the enemy to surrender.
