The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant George L. Ellis (ASN: 737106), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 11th Infantry Regiment, 5th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Brieulles, France, 4 November 1918. While his regiment was trying to force a crossing over the Meuse River, Sergeant Ellis swam and saved the lives of two of his comrades who had become exhausted in the cold water.
