The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant John J. Crowley (ASN: 1212204), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 107th Infantry Regiment, 27th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Ronssoy, France, 29 September 1918. When the advance of his platoon was checked by perilously heavy machine-gun fire, from the direct front, Sergeant Crowley, after ordering his men to cover, advanced alone and bombed the gun out of action. After successfully leading his platoon to one of the furthermost points of the advance, he was killed.
